@frauxirah has noticed (thanks!) that the new options for quote post visibility don't play nicely with smaller screens. The "Toot" button doesn't always fit.

This is an opportunity to make a change I've been thinking about for a while, since there are a number of problems with its current location anyway.

1. There's just not a lot of space, even on larger devices. This is a particular problem with languages with a longer typical word length than English.

2. It's close to lots of other things you might want to tap, so it's easy to accidentally send a post.

3. As much as Android can be said to have a "design language", it includes putting whatever action will close the current screen at the top right (e.g., the "Send" button when writing an e-mail in GMail).

The screenshots in the next post show a change I plan on rolling out in Pachli Current on Monday.

Both screenshots show the same change, one for a large device, one for a small device. In each one the image on the left is the current UI, the image on the right is the new UI, with changes highlighted). The changes are:

1. Move the "#", "@", and "Language" buttons in the toolbar from the right to the left.

2. Move and shrink the avatar of the account you're using to the start of the "Posting as..." text.

3. Move the "Toot" button to the top right.

This gives more space for the "Toot" button, keeps it away from anything else you might want to tap on, keeps the avatar close to the account name, and is consistent with Android design.

Feedback welcomed.

@pachli
Is the new position of the toot button some kind of new design standard? I understand the problem (as I see on the screenshot) but putting the "send" button away from the keyboard feels weird to me (personal opinion).

But, since the change needs to be made, the only thing I would suggest different is to shrink the avatar a bit more. Feels out of proportion.

@badnetmask @pachli I agree, its current size seems to big if you move it to its new position. I'd welcome the change. 👍

@badnetmask It's difficult to talk about anything on Android being a "design standard", as there is a lot of flexibility.

But it's not new. m2.material.io/components/app- notes "The top app bar provides content and actions related to the current screen. It’s used for branding, screen titles, navigation, **and actions.**"

m3.material.io/components/app- has "App bars should only have one action, two if necessary. **The primary action should alter or exit the entire page, like Send, Save, or Edit.**"

@pachli I'm not sure if I like the toot button above the text. I guess it depends if toots are more like emails (where "my" send button is already in the top right) or more like chats (where the send button is next to and below the text).

I'm fine with the rest of the changes.

@pachli I think this is great. So many apps that have a button at the bottom have it converted up when the keyboard becomes visible. Pachli didn't have this particular problem, but now it never will.

@pachli I love that the compose UI is not a Dialog anymore but takes full advantage of the screen

Föderation EN Sa 13.12.2025 07:59:37

@pachli The proposed UI changes make sense and look great to me.
On a different topic: could you reorder the "share" and "quote" so it has the same order as in Mastodon's web UI?

Föderation EN Sa 13.12.2025 12:58:18

@pachli I use tusky, not pachli at the moment but if you want my opinion, this should either be an option for the user or shouldn't be done. A lot of flagship phones are so giant now that it makes it difficult to reach areas at the very top of the screen while using the phone one-handed. I set tusky to a bottom tab bar for this reason also.

Föderation EN Sa 13.12.2025 15:34:54

@pachli which finger do you use to hit the toot button? Thumb? Mainly located ar bottom?

Föderation EN Mo 15.12.2025 11:48:21

@lufertec I think that's also an argument for moving it.

Arguably, actions that visibly change external state - like sending a new post - **should** be a little more difficult to perform accidentally, because the potential risk is a bit higher.
